All types of Fly Tying Wax
Fly tying wax is an essential tool for fly tyers, especially when working with coarse dubbing or delicate threads. It not only aids in tying materials securely but also contributes to the longevity and durability of the finished fly. At Kindale Fly Fishing, we’ve developed our own range of fly tying wax to meet the needs of tiers at all skill levels.
Fly tying wax plays a vital role in creating high-quality, durable flies. Waxed thread is less prone to rotting after exposure to water, which increases the lifespan of your flies. Wax helps keep materials in place during the tying process, preventing slippage and ensuring a secure tie. Additionally, coarse dubbing can be challenging to work with, but wax allows the fibres to stick better to the thread, enabling you to form tight, precise dubbing noodles or scruffy, buggy bodies as needed.
Fly tying wax comes in various types, each suited to specific applications. Common options include tyer’s wax, which is a general-purpose wax suitable for most tying scenarios, cobbler’s wax, a traditional option often black in colour and known for its ability to alter thread appearance, and tacky wax, designed for maximum stickiness and ideal for handling coarse dubbing and materials that require extra hold. Cobbler’s wax, when paired with yellow or primrose thread, creates an olive dun colour, perfect for Greenwell’s Glory and other classic patterns.
At Kindale Fly Fishing, we take pride in producing our wax from locally sourced materials. Our unique recipe ensures a super tacky yet non-greasy wax that’s easy to apply and highly effective. Our cobbler’s wax is softer than most on the market, making it easier to coat your thread evenly. Whether you’re tying delicate dry flies or robust nymphs, our wax adapts to your needs. The cobbler’s wax also allows you to experiment with thread colours, adding depth and versatility to your fly tying arsenal.
Using fly tying wax is simple and effective. Lightly coat your thread with wax, as you don’t need much—a thin layer will suffice. After applying the wax, twist your thread gently to distribute it evenly. For dubbing, roll the fibres onto the waxed thread to create a tight noodle or scruffy texture, depending on your pattern.
Choosing the right wax can make a significant difference in your fly tying experience. At Kindale Fly Fishing, our wax is designed with the tyer in mind.
